Getting to Know Assistive Technology
Assistive Technology (AT) includes equipment or software designed to address barriers encountered by a person with a disability. It can range from low tech solutions like magnifying glasses to more high tech solutions like software. The Disability Services Center offers a range of AT for students to use in their academic career at UC Irvine. Assistive Technology is discussed during the interactive process between students and their Disability Specialist.
Accessibility in technology refers to design that takes into consideration a wide range of users including individuals with disabilities. Often this includes built-in features that give users an opportunity to customize their experience. Some of the resources we share are everyday technologies that have been designed with accessibility in mind.
Technology is constantly changing. The assistive technology that we have listed is not representative of the full range of what exists. We are presenting some of the most commonly-used AT and accessibility resources.
The Assistive Technology Demo video highlights three of the tools available through the DSC. To learn more about them, have a look at our pages on Note-taking (Echo Smartpen & Otter) and Literacy (Kurzweil) resources.
Access Tech
Access Tech is a series of drop-in sessions for UCI students who are interested in learning more about assistive technology. Whether you use AT or are just curious, we will give a brief 15-minute overview of some of the technology solutions offered by the Disability Services Center. The rest of the hour will be open for your questions.
For upcoming sessions and other events, join DSC on Campus Group!
Please let us know if there is anything you need on order to participate. Zoom auto-generated Live Transcripts will be enabled. If you have questions about the technology shown on this page or would like a personal session, please contact dscetext@uci.edu.
